On July 4, 2022, a mass shooting occurred during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois. The shooting occurred at 10:14 a.m. roughly 15 minutes after the 4th of July parade started. News of the shooting was reported as I worked in my studio. I began to paint in reaction to this horrific tragedy caused by senseless gun violence. A high school student sitting on a red, white and blue float told local news, I thought the BANG I heard was a sound of fireworks, not the sound of a gun killing my friends.
